CBCT 3D Dental Scan
Imbasan 3D CBCT Gigi
3D dental imaging in the clinic
A CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) scan is a 3D X-ray of your teeth and jaws. Paddington Dental Surgery in Taman Pekan Baru, Sungai Petani, has a CBCT machine in the clinic, so when your dentist needs a 3D view, the scan can usually be taken during your visit without a trip to another centre. We also take standard digital X-rays (IOPA and OPG) for everyday diagnosis.

How is CBCT different from a normal dental X-ray?
A normal dental X-ray is a flat, 2D picture, so structures can overlap. A CBCT scan builds a 3D image that the dentist can rotate and view in thin slices on screen. This shows things a 2D X-ray may not show clearly, such as:
• How close a wisdom tooth's roots are to the nerve
• The height and width of the jawbone for an implant
• Extra or curved root canals, and infection around a root
• The position of teeth that have not come through, before or during braces
• Cysts or other changes in the jaw
When might you need a CBCT scan?
Most check-ups do not need CBCT. Your dentist may recommend one for:
• Wisdom tooth surgery, especially for lower teeth close to the nerve
• Dental implants, to plan the implant size, angle and position (see our digital implant workflow)
• Root canal treatment, for teeth with unusual root shapes or a tooth that is not settling after treatment
• Braces assessment, for impacted or missing teeth
• Oral surgery assessment by Dr Chan Yunn Shy, our Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, who usually attends on Saturdays, and on other days subject to availability
What to expect during the scan
• We ask you to remove metal items such as earrings, necklaces, hairpins, glasses and removable dentures.
• You are positioned in the machine with your chin resting on a support.
• You stay still while the arm rotates around your head. The scan itself takes only a short time.
• The dentist reviews the 3D images and explains what they show, often on screen with you.
There are no injections, and nothing goes inside your mouth apart from, sometimes, a small bite block.
Is CBCT safe?
CBCT uses X-rays, so we only recommend it when the extra 3D detail is likely to help with your diagnosis or treatment. A dental CBCT generally uses a lower radiation dose than a conventional medical CT scan of the head, and the scan area can be limited to the part of the mouth being examined. Please tell us before the scan if you are pregnant or might be pregnant.
Understanding your results
After the scan, the dentist looks through the 3D images slice by slice. They will explain what they see in plain language: for example, how far a wisdom tooth root is from the nerve, how much bone is available for an implant, or whether there is an infection at the tip of a root. If you would like to, ask to see the images on screen. Your scan is kept in your clinic record, so it can be compared with later images if needed.
Referred by another dentist?
If another dentist has asked you to have a CBCT scan, please bring the referral letter and mention it when you book, so we can plan the appointment.
Fees
Fees depend on your case, including the size of the area scanned. We explain the fee at your consultation, before the scan.
