CBCT 3D X-ray

A CBCT scan is a 3D X-ray of the teeth and jaws. Unlike a flat 2D X-ray, the dentist can rotate the image and look at thin slices. This helps show how close a wisdom tooth is to the nerve, how much bone there is for an implant, and the shape of curved or extra root canals. Our Vatech A9 CBCT is in the clinic, so the scan can usually be taken during your visit. Most check-ups do not need CBCT; the dentist recommends it only when a 3D view helps.

Intraoral scanning

An intraoral scanner is a small handheld camera wand that records your teeth and gums as a 3D model on screen. It uses light, not X-rays. We use digital scans alongside conventional impressions, and the dentist chooses the method that suits your treatment. For example, a conventional impression is often more accurate for full-arch work. When a scan is used, there is no impression tray to hold while it sets, and you can see your teeth on screen while the dentist explains.

3D printing in the clinic

Our clinic has its own 3D printer. It is mainly used to make surgical guides for digital (guided) dental implants. Your CBCT scan and intraoral scan are combined on the computer, the implant position is planned, and a guide that fits over your teeth is printed in the clinic. During surgery, the guide directs the drill according to the plan. Printing in-house means we do not wait for an outside lab, and the dentist can check the guide before your surgery.

Low-pain digital injections

For local anaesthetic, we use digital electronic injectors that deliver the anaesthetic slowly and steadily, designed to make the injection more comfortable. The anaesthetic itself is the standard one used in dentistry. You may still feel a small pinch or some pressure, and everyone's experience is different. If injections worry you, tell us when you book.

For a dental implant, for example:

  1. CBCT 3D scan to check the bone and nearby nerves

  2. Intraoral scan (or conventional impression, depending on the case) to record the teeth

  3. The dentist plans the implant on the computer

  4. A surgical guide is 3D-printed in the clinic

  5. The implant is placed under local anaesthesia, given with the low-pain digital injector

Wisdom tooth surgery, root canal treatment and braces planning use the same CBCT and scanning where needed. Complex surgical cases can be seen by Dr Chan Yunn Shy, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon (National Specialist Register), who usually attends on Saturdays, and on other days subject to availability.

Does Paddington Dental Surgery in Sungai Petani have a CBCT scanner?

Yes. The clinic has a Vatech A9 CBCT (3D X-ray) machine in-house, so when a 3D view is needed the scan can usually be taken during the same visit.

Does the clinic use an intraoral scanner instead of impressions?

The clinic uses a digital intraoral scanner alongside conventional impressions. The dentist chooses the method that suits the treatment; for full-arch work a conventional impression is often more accurate.

Are injections painless with the digital injector?

Do I need a CBCT scan at every visit?

No. Most check-ups do not need CBCT. The dentist recommends a 3D scan only when it helps, for example before wisdom tooth surgery, implants, complex root canal treatment or braces assessment.
