Frequently asked questions
Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. A healthy wisdom tooth that is fully through the gum and easy to clean can often stay. Removal is usually advised when it causes repeated pain, infection, decay or damage to the tooth next to it.
Why might I need a CBCT scan before wisdom tooth surgery?
A CBCT scan shows the tooth in 3D, including how close its roots are to the nerve in the lower jaw. Paddington Dental Surgery has a Vatech A9 CBCT in the clinic, so you usually do not need to go elsewhere for the scan.
Who performs wisdom tooth surgery at Paddington Dental Surgery?
Our Principal Dentist, Dr Chen Jun Sen, treats most cases. Some cases are referred to our in-house Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr Chan Yunn Shy, who is on the National Specialist Register and usually attends on Saturdays, and on other days subject to availability.
What will I feel during the procedure?
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure rather than sharp pain. Some soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards is normal.
How long does recovery take?
Swelling and discomfort are usually most noticeable in the first two to three days and then settle. A review is usually arranged after about 7-10 days to check healing.
Wisdom tooth removal at Paddington Dental Surgery
At Paddington Dental Surgery in Taman Pekan Baru, Sungai Petani, we assess and remove wisdom teeth that are causing problems, under local anaesthesia. When does a wisdom tooth need attention?
Wisdom teeth (the third molars) usually come through between the late teens and mid-twenties. Many people have no trouble with them. Others notice:
-
Pain or swelling at the back of the mouth
-
A sore, swollen gum flap over a half-erupted tooth (pericoronitis)
-
Food getting stuck behind the last tooth
-
Decay in the wisdom tooth or the tooth next to it
-
A tooth growing sideways or stuck under the gum or bone (an "impacted" tooth)
Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. If yours is healthy and easy to clean, we may simply keep an eye on it during your regular check-ups.
How we assess your wisdom tooth
-
Examination and history. We check the tooth, the gum around it and your medical history, and listen to your symptoms.
-
X-ray. A standard digital X-ray shows the overall position of the tooth.
-
CBCT 3D scan (when needed). If the roots look close to the nerve in the lower jaw, or the tooth is deeply impacted, a CBCT scan gives a 3D view. This helps the dentist plan the safest approach and explain the risks to you clearly.
-
Treatment plan. We explain your options, whether a simple extraction or a surgical removal, the expected recovery and the fee for your case, before anything is done.
What happens on the day
-
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic. We use digital electronic low-pain injectors, which release the anaesthetic slowly and steadily and are designed to reduce discomfort during the injection.
-
For a surgical removal, a small opening is made in the gum. Sometimes the tooth is divided into smaller pieces so it can be removed gently.
-
Dissolvable or removable stitches may be placed.
-
You go home the same day with written aftercare instructions and medication if needed.
Who performs the surgery?
Wisdom tooth surgery at Paddington Dental Surgery is performed by our principal dentist, Dr Chen Jun Sen, and by Dr Chan Yunn Shy, our Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon on the National Specialist Register.
Recovery and aftercare
-
Bite firmly on the gauze for the time advised, and avoid hard rinsing or spitting on the first day.
-
Choose soft, cool foods for a few days, and chew on the other side.
-
Swelling and stiffness are normal and are often most noticeable on the second or third day, then settle.
-
Take any medication exactly as prescribed, and avoid smoking while the area heals.
-
A review visit is usually arranged about 7–10 days later to check healing and remove stitches if needed.
If you need time off work or class, the dentist can advise whether a medical certificate is appropriate and for how long.
Fees
Fees vary from case to case. They depend on whether the tooth needs a simple or a surgical removal, which imaging is needed, and who performs the procedure. The dentist will explain the fee for your case after the assessment, before any treatment begins.
