Digital Intraoral Scanning & In-House 3D Printing

Imbasan Intraoral Digital & Cetakan 3D

Digital scans and conventional impressions

At Paddington Dental Surgery in Sungai Petani, we use a digital intraoral scanner to record your teeth in 3D, and an in-house 3D printer to make items such as surgical guides for dental implants. Digital scans are used alongside conventional impressions, and the dentist chooses the method that suits your treatment. For example, a conventional impression is often preferred for full-arch work.

What is an intraoral scanner?

An intraoral scanner is a small handheld wand with a camera at the tip. The dentist moves it gently over your teeth and gums, and it captures thousands of images that the computer joins into a detailed 3D model on screen. It uses light, not X-rays, so there is no radiation.

What it feels like

Often no impression tray. When a scan is used, there is no tray of impression material to hold in your mouth while it sets, which can be more comfortable, especially if you gag easily.
You can pause. The scan can be stopped at any time if you need to rest or swallow, and then continued.
You can see your teeth. The 3D model appears on screen, so the dentist can show you worn areas, gaps or cracks and explain your treatment.
Scanning both arches usually takes a few minutes. For some treatments, such as full-arch work, a conventional impression can be more accurate, and the dentist will tell you which method suits your case.

What we use digital scans for

Depending on your treatment, digital scans can be used for:
Dental implants, for planning the implant position together with a CBCT 3D scan
Crowns and bridges, sent to the dental lab as a digital file
Implant crowns, after the implant has healed
Orthodontic records and appliances, where suitable

In-house 3D printing

Our clinic has its own 3D printer. Its main use is making surgical guides for digital (guided) dental implants:
Your intraoral scan and CBCT scan are combined on the computer.
The dentist plans the implant position, angle and depth.
A custom guide that fits over your teeth is designed and printed in the clinic.
During surgery, the guide directs the implant drill according to the plan.
Because the scanning, planning and printing happen under one roof, we do not have to wait for an outside lab to make the guide, and the dentist can check the guide before your surgery.

What to expect at a scanning appointment

The dentist explains what the scan is for and shows you the scanner.
Your teeth are dried gently with air so the camera can see them clearly.
The wand is moved slowly over the teeth, one arch at a time, and then over your bite.
The 3D model appears on screen, and the dentist checks it is complete before you leave the chair.

Why digital records help

Clear communication. Digital files go to the lab without being posted or carried, and the 3D model shows fine detail.
A record over time. Scans can be saved and compared at later visits, for example to track tooth wear or movement.
Links to your other scans. The intraoral scan can be matched with your CBCT scan for implant and surgical planning.

FAQs

What is an intraoral scan?

An intraoral scan is a digital 3D impression of your teeth and gums, taken with a small handheld camera wand. It is used alongside conventional impressions, depending on your treatment.

Does an intraoral scan use radiation?

No. An intraoral scanner uses light to capture images, not X-rays, so there is no radiation.

How long does an intraoral scan take?

Scanning both upper and lower teeth usually takes a few minutes. You can pause at any time if you need to rest.

What does Paddington Dental Surgery 3D-print in the clinic?

Our in-house 3D printer is mainly used to make surgical guides for digital dental implants. The guide is designed from your CBCT and intraoral scans and helps place the implant in the planned position.

Will I still need a putty impression?

It depends on your treatment. For some treatments, such as full-arch work, a conventional impression can be more accurate. The dentist will advise which method suits your case.

Is there an extra charge for digital scanning?

Fees vary from case to case. The dentist will explain the fee for your treatment, and what it includes, after your assessment.
