Digital Dental Implants

Implan Gigi Digital

Implants planned digitally, from scan to guide

A dental implant is a small titanium post that replaces the root of a missing tooth and supports a crown on top. At Paddington Dental Surgery in Sungai Petani, we plan implants digitally. We combine a digital scan of your teeth with a CBCT 3D scan of your jaw, plan the implant position on screen, and then 3D-print a surgical guide in our own clinic. The guide helps the dentist place the implant in the position that was planned. Dental implants at the clinic are placed by our Principal Dentist, Dr Chen Jun Sen, and our Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr Chan Yunn Shy.

Our digital implant workflow, step by step

Consultation. We look at the gap, your gums, your bite and your medical history, and talk about your options: an implant, a bridge or a denture.
CBCT 3D scan. A CBCT scan, taken in the clinic, shows the height, width and quality of the bone, and where the nerve and sinus are.
Digital intraoral scan. A small handheld scanner records your teeth and gums in 3D. Depending on the case, the dentist may use a digital scan or a conventional impression.
Digital planning. The dentist combines the CBCT and the scan on screen to choose the implant size, angle and depth, with the final crown in mind.
3D-printed surgical guide. The plan is turned into a custom guide that fits over your teeth, printed on our in-house 3D printer.
Guided implant placement. The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, given with our digital electronic low-pain injectors. The guide then directs the drilling and placement of the implant according to the plan.
Healing. The implant is left to bond with the bone, usually for a few months. The dentist will tell you the expected healing time for your case. A temporary tooth may be possible in some cases.
Crown. We take another digital scan or a conventional impression, depending on the case, the crown is made, and it is fitted onto the implant.

Why plan implants digitally?

You can see the plan. We can show you the scan and the planned implant position on screen before treatment.
Planning around important structures. The 3D view helps the dentist plan around the nerve, the sinus and neighbouring roots.
Planned with the final tooth in mind. The implant position is chosen to suit the crown that will sit on it.
Scan or impression, chosen for your case. Digital scans can be used for planning and crown steps, alongside conventional impressions, which are often preferred for full-arch cases.
Made under one roof. Scanning, planning and guide printing happen in the clinic, so we do not wait for an outside lab to make the guide.
Guided surgery is a planning tool. It does not remove every risk, and not every case suits a guide. The dentist will explain what is suitable for you.

Who places the implants?

Dental implants at Paddington Dental Surgery are placed by our Principal Dentist, Dr Chen Jun Sen (BDS; ITI member), and by Dr Chan Yunn Shy, our Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon registered on the National Specialist Register. Dr Chan usually attends on Saturdays, and on other days subject to availability.

Who is suitable for an implant?

Implants can suit adults who have lost one or more teeth and have healthy gums. We check:
Whether there is enough bone (sometimes a bone graft is needed first)
Gum health, as gum disease should be treated before an implant
General health, such as diabetes control and certain medications
Smoking, which can affect healing

Implant systems

We use established implant systems, including Korean and American brands. The dentist will explain which options suit your case and how they differ.

Fees

Fees depend on your case: the number of implants, whether bone grafting is needed, the implant system and the crown. We explain them at your consultation, after your CBCT scan.

FAQs

What is a digital dental implant?

A digital dental implant is an implant planned on a computer using a CBCT 3D scan and a digital scan of your teeth. At Paddington Dental Surgery the plan is then turned into a surgical guide, 3D-printed in the clinic, that helps place the implant in the planned position.

How is a guided implant different from a conventional implant?

In a conventional implant, the dentist positions the drill by hand during surgery, using X-rays as a guide. In a guided implant, the position, angle and depth are planned in 3D beforehand, and a custom guide directs the drill during surgery.

How long does the whole implant process take?

Most implants take several months from consultation to final crown, because the implant needs time to bond with the bone. Your dentist will give you a timeline for your case.

Who places dental implants at Paddington Dental Surgery?

Dental implants are placed by our Principal Dentist, Dr Chen Jun Sen, and our Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr Chan Yunn Shy, who usually attends on Saturdays, and on other days subject to availability. The surgery is done under local anaesthesia, given with digital electronic low-pain injectors that are designed to make the injection more comfortable.

Can everyone have a dental implant?

Not everyone. You need enough healthy bone and healthy gums, and some medical conditions, medications or smoking can affect healing. A consultation and CBCT scan will show whether an implant is suitable for you.

How are dental implant fees decided?

Fees depend on your case: the number of implants, whether bone grafting is needed, the implant system and the crown. The dentist will explain them at your consultation, after your CBCT scan.
